Degree Programs Offered Through UPNG Open Campus.
University of Papua New Guinea Open Campus/College only supports degree/diploma students that are admitted by School of Business and Public Policy (BPP), School of Natural & Physical Sciences (SNPS) and the School of Humanities & Social Sciences (SHSS). Currently, there is no programs offered through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode by the School of Law (SOL) and the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) which operates from its own campus at Taurama Campus, at the back of Port Moresby General Hospital at 3 Mile in the National Capital District (NCD). The following programs are offered through Open Campuses and are available for students to study.
1. Foundation Year Business (FYB)

- This program is offered by the School of Business and Public Policy. The school admits/accepts students to study business programs at the school through ODL faciliciated by Open College are required to complete this first year program before they they stream into their respective programs in the second year. Students are selected through Grade 12 Examination results or any individual who has applied as Non-School Leaver using the UPNG Undergraduate Application Form. Upon sucessful completion of teh FYB program, the students can then stream into their major program of choice. For example Bachelor of Accounting, Bachelor of Economics and etc. For students who are admitted as On-Campus (those who are accepted to live and study at UPNG Waigani campus) can take one year to complete, while those who are admitted under ODL to study through Open Campuses may take up to 2 years to complete the Foundation Year. The reason, is Open College students can opt to take one or two courses in any semester, while internal students are required to take all courses per semester.

2. Arts Foundation Year. (AFY)
The Arts Foundation Year (AFY) is offered by the School of Humanities & Social Sciences (SHSS). It is similar to the Foundation Year Business program. Students are required to complete the AFY and then based on their academic results, they will then have to to stream into their respective Arts programs. For example Bachelors in Social Works, Bachelors in Communication & Journalism and etc 3. Science Foundation Year (SFY) The Science Foundation (SFY) is very much the same as Business Foundation Year and Arts Foundation Year program, where a students complete the 1 year and then stream into their program of choice majors. |
For example, Bachelor of Environmental Science, Bachelor of Sustainable Development and etc. The only difference though for ODL students is that the program is only offered at the UPNG NCD Open Campus. This is because of the practical laboratory exercises that are required in some of the courses in the program. It's can be offered in other Regional Study Centers once, the SNPS is recommends it. Currently, as the update of this website, there its not offered in other centers outside of Port Moresby.
How To Apply To Study at UPNG Through Open Campus/College.
UPNG Open College administers two (2) types of Programs. One is the Degree/Diploma programs offered by the Academic Schools as explained earlier in this page. The other is a Grade 12 and university studies bridging programs called Certificate in Tertiary & Community Studies (CTCS). Here, the application process for Degree Programs is outlined. The application for CTCS and related information on separate page which is CTCS Program. Here are the steps Grade 12 Students and Non-School Leaver Application:
1. Grade 12 students can fill in UPNG as the institution of choice and the respective program in the Choice School Leavers Form administered by their respective schools prior to the National Grade 12 University Examinations. Then based on that, UPNG schools will make two lists. Internal Students-those who will be accommodated on campus at UPNG Waigani Campus and the ODL students who will be offered the option to study through Open Campus study centers across the country. The Acceptance list will be published in the two daily newspapers and also posted on the UPNG website www.upng.ac.pg.
The ODL acceptance list will then be circulated to all provincial study centers. The selected students can then register from the study center that is nearest to them.
2: Non-School Leavers. This option is for those who have previously completed Grade 12 or working class who would like to return to UPNG to study. UPNG normally announces the Call for Admission/Application by way of releasing the Application for the upcoming year around April/May each year and dateline for the application usually closes around end of July. All interested individuals must download this application form from the UPNG website or get it through the Study Centers. Fill the Application Form and then return to UPNG Student Administration for processing. All the available programs are listed on the Application Form and other relevant information regarding the requirements as well. An application Fee of K20.00 is usually required as part of the processing fee which can be deposited into the designated UPNG Account. Successful applicants will be notified by the University Administration and list published in the daily newspapers as well. Then, they can register at the Study Center of their choice.
